I Meet 3 EB-1A Criteria. Does That Mean I'm Ready?

Meeting three EB-1A criteria doesn't automatically mean you're ready to file a strong petition. The quality of your evidence, the significance of your achievements, and the overall strength of your professional profile matter just as much as the number of criteria you meet. This blog explains why simply checking boxes isn't enough, how USCIS evaluates extraordinary ability beyond individual criteria, and why building a cohesive, well-documented profile is essential for a stronger EB-1A petition.

I Meet 3 EB-1A Criteria. Does That Mean I'm Ready?

“I have judging, high salary and Critical Role. That's three criteria. Am I ready for EB-1A?”

This is one of the most common questions we hear from professionals evaluating their profiles. It's understandable why. EB-1A includes specific evidentiary criteria, so naturally people begin by counting how many they might satisfy.

But there's an important difference between identifying three potential criteria and understanding the strength of the overall profile.

Not Every “Yes” Looks the Same

Consider two people who both say they have judging experience. One completed a single opportunity but has very little information about how they were selected or what they evaluated. The other has repeatedly been selected to evaluate work connected to their expertise and has clear documentation around those activities.

On a spreadsheet, both might write “Judging: Yes.” The underlying stories, however, look very different.

The same thing can happen with Critical Role, Original Contribution, authorship, high salary and other areas. Simply counting categories doesn't tell you the strength of what's underneath them.

Eventually, You Have to Zoom Out

Once individual criteria have been considered, it's important to look at the career as a whole. What does the person's professional history actually show? Is there meaningful recognition? Can we see impact over time? Do the different parts of the profile reinforce each other?

Strong profiles often aren't collections of unrelated activities. The pieces make sense together. Someone's professional work may lead to recognition, which may lead to speaking opportunities, invitations to judge others' work or other forms of industry involvement.

That's very different from randomly collecting activities simply because they appear on a criteria list.

Sometimes the Answer Is “Not Yet”

Someone can have an excellent career and still need more time before their profile is where they want it to be. They may have strong achievements but limited documentation, or one very strong area while other parts of the profile still need development.

Sometimes the answer isn't to add five new activities. It may be to better understand and develop what already exists.

Counting potential criteria is a useful starting point. It just shouldn't be the final question. Instead of only asking, “How many criteria do I have?”, also ask: “How strong is what's behind them, and what does my career show when everything is viewed together?”
